The gold inside A Minecraft Movie

After 2 weeks, A Minecraft Movie is the frontrunner in 2025 in terms of box office performance, surpassing Captain America: Brave New World. Comparisons to other recent video game adaptations such as Super Mario Bros [Mario] (2023), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), Borderlands (2024) and Until Dawn (to be released on April 25th 2025) show that Minecraft is a top performer, surpassing even Mario after 2 weeks.

Looking across all consumer behaviors within social and video media environments (with a focus on comments / posts as they are a very strong predictor of performance), Minecraft and Mario performed at very similar levels in the weeks leading up to their respective releases, well above the other titles studied.

From a demographic perspective, Minecraft delivered similar levels of male / female movie engagers as the other films (roughly ⅓ female). Mario also delivered levels similar to that of its recent game releases, all delivering an audience that is approximately one third female. However, self-identified Minecraft gamers are more evenly balanced (45% female) versus the film (34%) suggesting opportunities to tailor creative and media toward this audience group.

The studios for Minecraft and Mario both dropped their initial teaser and trailer ahead of the industry benchmark by nearly 2 months, an interesting trend as studios try to compete more aggressively for share of wallet and time.

Reactions to the first trailer released on September 4, 2024 highlighted a desire that the film be animated versus live action (something that was too late to change by that point). In addition, Minecraft players expressed dissatisfaction with the trailer’s lack of authenticity to the original game. Reactions to the first trailer skewed very negative vs expected levels.

Reactions to the second trailer released on November 19, 2024 were more encouraging, with an appreciation of the Minecraft music and other small details (characters, scenes, etc) that were represented. While some concerns remained on the quality of the CGI used and storyline, the reactions overall skewed less negative than after the first trailer.

Key findings for different populations within discourse for the movie include:
